Get your free estimateLennox Thermostat Installation: The Hempstead Owner’s Guide
Lennox thermostat installation in Hempstead typically runs $220 – $480 installed, depending on whether you’re swapping in a standard programmable model or stepping up to a smart thermostat like the Lennox iComfort S30 or E30. We stock Lennox-compatible thermostats on our trucks and can usually complete the swap same-day when we’re already out on a call. Most Hempstead homeowners discover the problem the hard way: the display goes blank, the furnace short-cycles, or the house simply won’t hold the temperature you set. If your Lennox system was installed between 2008 and 2016, you’re in the window where we see original thermostats failing most often, particularly after the humid summers and cold snaps we get out here on Long Island.
Before you replace anything, check two things. First, is the breaker to your air handler or furnace still on? Second, do you see a blank screen but the system still runs? A blank screen with a running system usually means a dead thermostat battery or a tripped float switch, not a failed thermostat. A blank screen with a dead system is more often the thermostat or its low-voltage wiring. The fix is rarely just the part. The wiring behind the wall matters just as much, and we check both.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Lennox has used a few different thermostat platforms over the years, and they do not all play nice together. If your system has a communicating thermostat, like the iComfort series, you cannot simply drop in a generic Honeywell or Nest and expect it to work. Communicating thermostats use a proprietary four-wire protocol that talks digital data to the furnace control board, not the standard 24-volt R/C/W/Y/G wiring a basic thermostat uses. Hempstead homes with Lennox SLP98, EL296, or XC-series equipment installed after 2010 are almost always communicating systems.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see constantly: the Lennox iComfort S30 will not run a system that was originally paired with the older iComfort WiFi or iComfort Touch models without a firmware update and, in some cases, a control board swap. The E30 is more forgiving and works with most communicating Lennox setups. If your system is non-communicating, a standard 24-volt thermostat works fine, and we can install a Lennox-branded conventional thermostat or a quality aftermarket model like an Ecobee or Honeywell T9, both of which we’ve installed in dozens of Hempstead homes. For communicating systems, OEM is the only sane route. Aftermarket communicating stats for Lennox are rare and usually create more grief than savings.
Dalton Heating & Air Hempstead is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Lennox, but our techs are factory-trained on Lennox equipment, and we keep Lennox OEM thermostats and the common communicating control boards in stock on the truck because that’s what keeps a Hempstead repair to one visit.

Signs Your Lennox Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Display is blank or flickering. Dead batteries in a non-communicating thermostat are the most common cause, but a flickering display on a communicating stat often points to a failing power supply or a wiring short behind the wall.
- Temperature reading is off by more than 3 degrees. The thermostat’s internal sensor drifts over time, and Hempstead homes with high summer humidity accelerate that drift. You’ll set 72 and get 76, or vice versa.
- Short cycling: the system turns on and off every few minutes. A failing thermostat relay or a bad temperature differential setting causes this. Short cycling is hard on a Lennox compressor and will shorten its life, so this is not one to ignore.
- The system runs but won’t respond to changes. You bump the set point up or down and nothing happens for minutes, or the stat shows a different set point than what you entered. The touchscreen digitizer on iComfort units is a known failure point.
- Error codes on the stat or the furnace control board flashing. Hempstead service calls for this one usually end up being a failed communicating thermostat that can no longer talk to the board, not a furnace problem at all.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the Hempstead pricing picture, in writing, the way we quote every job:
| Thermostat Type | Installed Price Range | Typical Install Time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard programmable (Lennox or aftermarket) | $220 – $340 | 1 – 1.5 hours |
| Lennox iComfort E30 (communicating) | $380 – $480 | 1.5 – 2 hours |
| Lennox iComfort S30 smart thermostat | $420 – $520 | 1.5 – 2.5 hours |
| Smart aftermarket (Ecobee, Honeywell T9) on non-communicating system | $300 – $430 | 1 – 1.5 hours |
The price includes the thermostat, all needed wiring corrections, setup and programming, and a walk-through of how to use the thing before we leave. If your existing wiring is undersized or there’s a low-voltage issue in the wall, we’ll show you the problem and quote the correction before we touch it, in writing. Every thermostat install from Dalton carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we make it right. If the repair fails within the year, we come back at no charge.
What drives the range: communicating Lennox stats cost more because the hardware is proprietary, and some Hempstead homes with older wiring need a new thermostat wire pulled, which adds labor. Non-communicating replacements are faster and the parts are cheaper.
DIY or Call Us?
A thermostat swap on a standard 24-volt system is one of the few HVAC jobs a capable homeowner can genuinely do. Kill the breaker, label the wires, match them to the new base plate. Done properly, it’s a 45-minute job. Where DIY goes wrong, and where we get called to clean up, is with communicating Lennox systems. The four-wire protocol is not color-coded like conventional thermostat wire. Mix up the data lines and you can take out the thermostat and the furnace control board in one shot. That’s a $220 DIY job turned into a $900 parts bill faster than you’d believe.
If you have an iComfort system, or if you open the wall and find more wires than you expected, or if you simply want it done with a written price and a full-year guarantee, call (516) 559-4840. Marco Benitez and our crew do these swaps in Hempstead every week. We’ll match the thermostat to your exact Lennox model, check the wiring, set the programming, and leave the site clean.
FAQs
Most Lennox thermostats last 8 to 12 years in Hempstead homes. Humidity, power fluctuations from coastal storms, and constant temperature changes through Long Island winters take a toll. Communicating models with touchscreens tend to fail on the display or power supply side around year 8. Non-communicating models often outlast the furnace they were installed with.
Not sure if yours is failing or the furnace is? Call (516) 559-4840 and we’ll walk through the symptoms with you on the phone.
In most cases, no. The failure is usually in a sealed circuit board, a burned relay, or a cracked solder joint, and the parts are not sold separately for repair. Replacing the thermostat is almost always the correct and cheaper fix in Hempstead, unless the real problem is the wiring in the wall, which we can repair. Call us at (516) 559-4840 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s the stat or the wiring.
A standard swap takes about an hour. A communicating Lennox iComfort installation with programming and setup typically runs 90 minutes to two hours. Homes in Hempstead with older wiring may need a new thermostat cable pulled, which adds time and we’ll tell you that upfront, in writing, before we start.
Yes. We stock the Lennox iComfort E30, iComfort S30, Lennox conventional programmable models, and quality aftermarket options like Ecobee and Honeywell T9 on our service trucks. That means same-day installation is usually possible when you call from Hempstead. For less common Lennox control parts, we can have them from our regional supplier within one business day. Call (516) 559-4840 to confirm what’s on the truck today.
